Okay so this is a random post... but I'm about to tell you WHY to buy a full pineapple instead of the precut pineapple. And I'm also going to tell you HOW to cut it up once you have that massive fruit in your kitchen. I mean, how many people like pineapple? A lot. And how many people unknowingly waste money? A lot. And oh... how many people don't know how to cut a whole pineapple up? Probably... a lot.
Now, maybe I was the only one. But the first time I brought a whole pineapple home, I had to google how to cut it up, so I figured, if I had to google it, then someone else may too. Hence, the reason for this post. Also - as we all know, I'm a huge bargain hunter.. and buying precut pineapple at the grocery store just doesn't feel good on the budget.
For example: my go-to grocery store is Harris Teeter (it's ... the best). At Harris Teeter...

In the fresh produce section, they have some precut fruits. The precut pineapple? $4.99 for a little container. (see? proof to the left).
You walk a little bit further, and you hit the whole fruit section.
Here, you can find an entire beautiful WHOLE pineapple for... guess what? Half the price. I think the normal price is 3.99 (only a dollar less) but almost everyyy time I've gone into the store, it's on sale with your Harris Teeter shoppers card for $2.49. So you're getting ultimately the same product for half the cost.
Now listen, I know a $2.50 price difference isn't HUGE... but when you're on a budget and have 123908234 other things to pay for each month, every $2.50 counts! PLUS - whole pineapples look GORGEOUS in your kitchen until you're ready to cut them up. See?
Now that you can appreciate the beauty of a whole pineapple sitting on your counter top for a week or two, it's time to cut it up. It's actually super simple and takes less than 5 minutes. Grab a sharp knife and a cutting board (I'm going to show you how to cut a pineapple into rings, just like the precut and packed pineapple).
Step 1: Cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple.
Step 1: Cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple.
Step 2: Stand the pineapple up, and cut the skin off of each side around the pineapple in strips.
Step 3: Lay the pineapple back down on it's side and cut into slices.
Step 4: Take a sharp knife and cut out the core. (Some pineapples will have a super soft core that can be eaten but most likely it'll be somewhat tough and you'll want to cut it out). This step will give you the pineapple rings like the ones precut in the store!
Step 5: (Optional) I went one step further and cut each ring into 4 bit size pieces. Perfect for a quick snack!
Throw all the pieces into a tupperware container and put in the fridge. Having these on hand is PERFECT snack when you've got a sweet tooth craving.
YUM. Like I said, this was a super random post... but now you know how to cut up a whole pineapple, save a little bit of money, keep a delicious quick snack in your fridge AND have a gorgeous fresh centerpiece on your countertop for a couple of days! All in one. Not too shabby!
